PS Dance Project: #BoysDanceToo: Billy Elliot at Palm Springs Cultural Center

PS Dance Project: #BoysDanceToo: Billy Elliot

120 mins | Rated TBC

Join us for an evening of film and discussion featuring local storied dancers and choreographers centering around #boysdancetoo.

The event begins at 5:00 pm with a screening of the award-winning film BILLY ELLIOT- followed by a panel discussion w/ Howard Sayette, Jose De La Cuesta, and Douglas Graham.

The trending hashtag #BoysDanceToo has recently been drawing attention to the issue of boys in dance. For 2020 programming, the Palm Springs Dance Project collaborates with the Palm Springs Cultural Center to shed light on the subject of boys in dance and the prejudice, bullying and homophobia they are subject to, causing many fine male dancers to withdraw, altogether, while a small amount persevere.

The Sunday night screening of Billy Elliot will lead to a poignant discussion by a panel of three storied male dancers, living within the Palm Springs Community, who, with a moderator, will discuss their experiences, personal stories, challenges, and how they overcame the odds to become accomplished and acclaimed dancers and choreographers.

BILLY ELLIOT

Billy Elliot tells the story of the life of a miner's son in Northern England and how it is forever changed one day when he stumbles upon a ballet class on his way to boxing lessons. Joining the class and keeping it a secret from his widowed father and overbearing brother, 11-year-old Billy finds himself in dance, demonstrating the kind of raw talent seldom seen by the class's exacting instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson. She encourages him to try out for the Royal Ballet. But when his father and brother find out and forbid him to continue, Billy is torn between his responsibility to his family and to the gift with which he has been blessed.

PANELISTS

Howard Sayette has enjoyed a distinguished career as dancer, teacher and ballet master. Mr Sayette’s link to the great ballet of the Diaghilev era began when he was a member of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where he danced in some of the great ballets of Massine, Fokine, and Balanchine. Mr. Sayette also held a long associate with the Oakland Ballet, and has staged and re-staged many ballets internationally. He has received the Oakland Ballet’s Artistic Director’s Award for outstanding artistry and service and was the recipient of the Susan E. Brackett Distinguished Visiting Artist Chair from the University of Oklahoma for outstanding contributions to the international dance community.

José de la Cuesta is a well-known director/choreographer formerly living in NY. Credits include: “A Chorus Line”, “Sugar Babies”, “West Side Story”, and “42nd Street”. His work has been performed at Carnegie Hall twice and he wrote and directory an original production called “A Funky Fairytale” for Trumps Casino in Atlantic City to critical acclaim and was held over twice. He received the prestigious Carbonnell Award for best choreographer for The Broward Stage Door Production of “42nd Street”. As a performer Jose has worked in all areas of performing and has toured extensively in the United States and Internationally. He has also worked with such stars as Chita Rivera, Barbara Eden, Brooke Shields, and Lonnie Anderson among others. He is also a renowned teacher

Douglas Graham is a choreographer and director, who has enjoyed many years as a successful Broadway and television performer. Coming from a strong professional theatrical background, Doug worked for such choreographers as Bob Fosse, Ron Field, Gillian Lynn and Michael Bennet. He has been seen on Broadway and in National Tours on productions such as CHICAGO (with Chita Rivera), Bob Fosse’s DANCIN', CATS (as the Rum Tum Tugger), PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, and Radio City. He is a master instructor of the Fosse technique, theatre dance and jazz.
