Join us for an evening of film and discussion featuring local storied dancers and choreographers centering around #boysdancetoo.
The event begins at 5:00 pm with a screening of the award-winning film BILLY ELLIOT- followed by a panel discussion w/ Howard Sayette, Jose De La Cuesta, and Douglas Graham.
The trending hashtag #BoysDanceToo has recently been drawing attention to the issue of boys in dance. For 2020 programming, the Palm Springs Dance Project collaborates with the Palm Springs Cultural Center to shed light on the subject of boys in dance and the prejudice, bullying and homophobia they are subject to, causing many fine male dancers to withdraw, altogether, while a small amount persevere.
The Sunday night screening of Billy Elliot will lead to a poignant discussion by a panel of three storied male dancers, living within the Palm Springs Community, who, with a moderator, will discuss their experiences, personal stories, challenges, and how they overcame the odds to become accomplished and acclaimed dancers and choreographers.
BILLY ELLIOT
Billy Elliot tells the story of the life of a miner's son in Northern England and how it is forever changed one day when he stumbles upon a ballet class on his way to boxing lessons. Joining the class and keeping it a secret from his widowed father and overbearing brother, 11-year-old Billy finds himself in dance, demonstrating the kind of raw talent seldom seen by the class's exacting instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson. She encourages him to try out for the Royal Ballet. But when his father and brother find out and forbid him to continue, Billy is torn between his responsibility to his family and to the gift with which he has been blessed.
