Weekly Certified Farmers Market Returns Popular Community Event Back for a Full Season of Produce, Food & Fun

PALM SPRINGS – September 11, 2008: The Palm Springs Cultural Center announced today that the Palm Springs Certified Farmers Market, which debuted last February to broad support from local farmers and the Palm Springs community, will return this fall. The Market’s opening day will be Saturday, October 4 from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm, at its signature location, adjacent to the Camelot Theatres in the Palm Springs Mall parking lot at 2300 E. Baristo Road at Farrell in Palm Springs. The Market will continue every Saturday, through June 13, 2009, and is a weekly “food-based” community event.

“Very simply, it’s where you find the freshest, best-tasting produce available,” said Paul Palodichuk, Manager of the Certified Farmers Market, trumpeting the opening of the 2008-09 market season. “All of our farmers and vendors are regionally-based, most within 100 miles of the Coachella Valley, so the food is incredibly fresh. It’s part of our mission to help maintain the viability of these farms by supporting the purchase of locally-grown products. We want to send a message that local farms are critical to the quality of life we enjoy here.”

The Market kicked-off last February and has seen unparalleled success with an estimated 1,000 shoppers each week buying fresh vegetables and fruit (no spray and organic). Additionally, the Market offers cut flowers, honey, eggs, nuts, herbs, bread, cheese and plants. On a typical peak-season day, the Market sees about 1,500 visitors and locals, says Palodichuk.

The opening day festivities will kick-off with the return of all the vendors from last year, plus new additions Hamlow Farms, with raisins, almonds, walnuts, and persimmons; Lichen Z Farms with hydroponic herbs and lavender; and the Temecula Olive Oil Company, which offers olive oils that are 100% California-grown, 100% Extra Virgin, and have never been chemically- or heat-treated in any way.

Several features and services of the Market will return this year as well. A free dog sitting service will be offered for shoppers from 9:00 am to 10:30 am provided by Fetch Pet Care and Barkbusters Home Dog Training. Palm Springs Disposal Services will have their “Blue
Bins” available each week for recycling and ongoing ‘green’ and recycling information.

Weekly musical entertainment will provide a lively backdrop, while “Market Chef” Tanya Petrovna of Native Foods Restaurants demonstrates cooking tips and recipes using fresh produce from the Market. The Market will feature other ‘guest chefs’ from around the Valley throughout the season as well. The Well in the Desert will have their canned food bin available for donations and collect farmer-donated produce at the end of the Market.

“We’re very pleased to have the Market back,” said Mary Jo Ginther, Director of Tourism for the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism. “It’s great to have a fantastic event to point people to on Saturday mornings. The Certified Farmer’s Market is a wonderful community event for visitors, locals and snowbirds who want to get outside, be part of something, and shop for some of the best produce and products in the Valley. Let’s make this the best year for the Market yet.
